These earrings are named after one of my dearest friends, Athena! Her favorite flower is jasmine, which also inspired the design for these earrings. One of the reasons Athena likes jasmine so much is because of the lovely fragrance they emit. I read that in medieval times the jasmine flower reminded people of Our Blessed Mother because "Mary exhales the sweet fragrance of Jesus Christ." I couldn't think of a more fitting flower for my friend Athena!
When I moved to Phoenix to live near my fiance (now husband) I said a prayer that God would place holy people into my life. I began working at a crisis pregnancy center and met some amazing Catholics there. One of my co-workers at the time was a lovely and faithful woman. After a little while of my co-worker telling me how she thought I could be friends with her daughter I agreed to meeting Athena (her daughter). I figured her daughter would probably be pretty wonderful as well. As God would have it we met on the 4th of July at a firework show. It seems only fitting that there was a firework show the day we met. It seemed as if Heaven was rejoicing upon us becoming friends. My husband (fiance at the time) was with me when we met as well and we had such a fun time!
Athena and I continued to see one another here and there, but I think our friendship deepened when we decided to help lead a 54-day Rosary novena together. You know you have found a good friend when you both decide to help lead a Rosary novena together! Athena has always called me on in holiness in many different ways. She has such a beautiful love for Jesus and His Sacred Heart as well as for Our Blessed Mother.
We often describe our encounters as mini visitations. St. Mother Teresa once said, "Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier." When you have found a friend who allows you to leave their presence better and happier you know you have found a great friend. When you experience the ups and downs together, but still encourage one another and bring rest to a weary heart that is a true friend. Christ works through friendships and I see Christ so clearly in Athena. His Sacred Heart moves in and through her.
I am so thankful to Jesus and Mary for Athena and her friendship!
